People often wonder and ask me what it’s like, moving across the country, leaving my friends and family behind, leaving my Funny Little House, and so on. The truth is, there isn’t really a trick to it. You just go.
You just pack up your stuff – it truly is just stuff. And you leave your favorite Funny Little House – truly… it is only a building. And you start living life someplace new.
Minnesota to Wisconsin to Oklahoma back to Minnesota to Wisconsin and now on to Missouri. Our family has been fortunate enough to live in several states over the years due to Big Jon’s job changes. And what I’ve learned is that even tho the quote is, “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t no one happy.” the truth is… “If Daddy don’t like his job…. life is not fun for anyone!”
So here we are. Welcome to Lake St. Louis, Missouri, a suburb about 30 minutes west of St Louis. We have traded our 4 bedroom house for a 3 bedroom, second-floor apartment. We have traded the relaxing, resort-like atmosphere of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for a busy suburban area filled with people. We have traded a one hour drive to the closest mall for a one minute drive to any store I could possibly think of or want.
Whew – what a change!
The enormity of moving across the country is amazing, and yet the biggest change of all is that the nest is now completely empty. Completely.
We have left behind the two holdouts we still had living with us. Favorite Third Son just loves Wisconsin and so he stayed. I have no doubt that he will remain in that area for the rest of his life.
And of course, Favorite Baby is at school in Minnesota. His childhood home is in Wisconsin. His high school friends are there. His summer job is there. His home is not in Missouri.
So now what?
Well, let me tell you! Those cute little empty nest quotes and plaques that you have read are filled with lies! All lies!
They said that I would miss the fingerprints on the walls… but I don’t.
They said that I would miss the noise of little voices… but I don’t.
They said that I would wish for days filled with laundry and carpool and playdates… but I don’t.
They said that I would miss cooking for my big family… but I don’t.
The truth is…
I love going to the movies on Tuesday nights. (Did you know it’s only $5 and you get free popcorn?)
I love trying new recipes that the Warriors would never eat.
I love that I do two – yes TWO loads of laundry a week!
I love that when I put things away, they are still there when I go back.
I love that there are no paper plates or half drunk soda cans lying about.
I am LOVING this empty nest thing!
So I guess now it’s time for me. Time to embrace this moving across the country thing. Time to find a good Bible Study and a new church. Time to make a few new friends. Time to find a really great coffee shop with a sunny window for me to write. Time to join a book club. Time to sew some really awesome burp cloths for Nana’s Sweatshoppe. Time to hang out with Big Jon, walk the dogs, and explore the Show-Me state.
It’s time to jump into this new adventure with both feet.
