In this post: How to decorate an apartment for Christmas
At the Funny Little House on the day after Thanksgiving, I drug out boxes and bins full of Christmas decoration. Greenery for the mantle, greenery for the window boxes. Two Christmas trees – one for the living room and one for the porch. Lights, lights, and more lights!
What is one to do when she has more bins and boxes than can even fit in her Cozy Little Apartment? Let’s find out.

5 Tips and tricks for how to decorate an apartment for Christmas
I admit it. I was a little worried, a little hesitant, a little uninspired this year when it came time to put up the Christmas decorations. We live in a much smaller space. No fireplace or mantle. Where do I hang the stockings? Do I even hang the stockings?
I remembered when I was a little girl living in a home without a fireplace. Somehow we managed. Somehow Santa found us and got in. Somehow our stockings got hung. (In case you are wondering, they were hung on a cardboard fireplace that we plugged in for a light up fire. Classic, right?)
Today I want to share with you my Very Merry Cozy Little Apartment. It can be done. It is possible to choose between the different wreaths that you own. You can choose to use the big Santa with the chimney or the tall skinny Santa, or even just a reindeer if you like. But I have a few suggestions.
You can create a beautiful, festive environment in any space with just a few tips and tricks.
Trick #1 – Make Some Choices
Get all of the boxes out and pick out your very favorite things. You cannot use all of your nutcracker collection or there won’t be room to walk. Make some strategic choices that will add color and bring you loads of joy. Choose only the things that you love.
Trick #2 – Pick a Color Scheme
In the Funny Little House, I could use all kinds of Christmas colors. Red and green, and blue and gold, and some silver over here. Whatever I felt like because there was plenty of open space to soak it up. Not so much here in the cozy apartment.
So pick a color. I decided to focus on red and white this year. With a little splash of silver here and there. This little trick ties all the Christmas decor together and unites the rooms. I even used those colors for my wrapping paper and ribbon. 🙂
Trick #3 – Pack Some Stuff Away
You can’t have everything out at once. Well, you can, but you will probably start to feel overwhelmed and under-joyed. Put a bunch of everyday decors away for a while. It will be so much fun to get it out in January again!
Trick #4 – Add to What’s Already There
Add some pinecones, greenery, berries, whatever, to an existing arrangement or wreath. You don’t have to change out the whole thing, you can Christmas it up with some ribbon or a poinsettia pick. This is a super inexpensive way to add color and utilize what you already have.
Trick #5 – Choose Joy
Honestly, this is what it is all about. Just choose joy in the moment. Fill your space with the colors, the decorations, the flowers, the fabrics, even the people that bring you joy. Christmas is about love and family and the wonder of Jesus. Enjoy it.
