In this post: Nana’s Sweatshoppe has a bunch of new and fun fall baby gifts for the little ones in your life.
It’s been a while since I’ve updated Y’all on what’s going on over at Nana’s Sweatshoppe. Nana P has been busy this fall creating of a bunch of new fun fall baby gifts. There are several new fabrics and trims and even some Alabama gear for your favorite pixie or warrior.
As you know, when I moved to Alabama people began asking us which A we were going to support – as in the University of Alabama or Auburn University. Roll Tide or Auburn Tigers?
What’s not to enjoy about the hoopla that surrounds Bama football.
You can’t beat the colors and the spirit that these folks display in honor of their teams. Although, what is the deal with the Auburn Tigers and the War Eagle? If they are the Tigers, what is with the War Eagle?
According to the Auburn University website:
“War Eagle” is Auburn’s battle cry, not a mascot or nickname. The most popular story about the battle cry dates back to the first time Auburn met Georgia on the football field in 1892 and centers around a spectator who was a veteran of the Civil War. In the stands, with him, that day was an eagle the old soldier had found on a battlefield during the war. He had kept it as a pet for almost 30 years. According to witnesses, the eagle suddenly broke free and began majestically circling the playing field. As the eagle soared, Auburn began a steady march toward the Georgia end zone for a thrilling victory. Elated at their team’s play and taking the bird’s presence as an omen of success, Auburn students and fans began to yell “War Eagle” to spur on their team. At the game’s end, the eagle took a sudden dive, crashed into the ground, and died. But the battle cry “War Eagle” lived on to become a symbol of the proud Auburn spirit.”
I like it. Seriously, how cool is that?
There are three more options for the War Eagle legend, but I’m going with this one. 🙂
What exactly does an elephant have to do with Alabama’s Crimson Tide?
Well, this is a good story too.
On October 8, 1930, sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story about the Alabama-Mississippi game where the Alabama coach had started his second string team in the first quarter. And the second stringers were plenty big and tough and winning.
However, “At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped this Alabama varsity.
“It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size.”
As for me, being from Minnesota and attending the University of Minnesota, I’m a die-hard Gopher fan.
