Occasionally, I feel the need to give you some updates along with a gentle reminder to follow your dreams, take a leap, give it a go. However you might want to phrase it, life is about taking risks. We all need to take a risk and jump.

I’ve never been very good at taking risks. When Big Jon and I first met he was in the grocery business and he dreamed of one day owning a grocery store. That was really scary to me. The expense, the responsibility, the commitment, the risk. It seemed like too much.
I was very afraid of taking that kind of risk. Then came Favorite First Born, Favorite Second, Favorite Third and Favorite Baby. Amidst all that, the risks became greater and greater and eventually, the dream was lost in time. Imagine my surprise when my warriors have dreams even larger than their father’s!
The Warriors seem to be somewhat genetically inclined to take risks. Favorite First Born is a true entrepreneur. He just believes that his ideas are all fabulous. That they will work and be successful. He is not afraid to jump in with both feet and he is honestly OK with either result – sink or swim.
Although, seriously, who doesn’t’ prefer to swim! 🙂
In 2016 he launched his first company. He had a great job in a marketing agency that he loved and then he decided to start his own business – Activate Writing. He just jumped. He had rent, a car payment, student loans and a fiance at the time, and he just jumped!
How does he do it?
He makes a plan, takes a risk, and jumps.
When I was younger I thought it would be a great idea to invent something that would make cutting your grapefruit simpler. It was so hard and time-consuming to cut the sections to eat. I told my friends and we laughed and then someone else invented a grapefruit spoon and probably made millions. Or maybe that spoon already existed, who can be sure.
Like his Mama, Favorite Third got an idea. About a year ago (2015) he came up with an idea for a new TV show. Most people would think, “yeah, I have this great idea…” have a few beers with their buddies, chat about the fun idea and forget it. But not Favorite Third.
Favorite Third took his idea and he started researching how to sell it. Over the course of the past year, he fine-tuned his idea, located an agent and bam. Now he is in LA pitching his idea to a possible agent who is interested in selling his idea to a production company.
He just jumped!
A college student, who lives at home to save money, spends a hefty chunk of change to travel across the country, meet with an agent, and maybe sell his idea.
Take a risk and jump!
Update: Now, in 2018, is he still pursuing this dream of the TV show, but he has also graduated from college and opened an online business. Yup. Proud Mama here. 🙂
What makes these warriors take the risk? Why do they say yes to trying? Why do they jump?
Is it the way they are wired? Maybe. The Lord knows it has nothing that I’ve done. I’m the chicken that didn’t want to buy a grocery store. Their dad and I chose the safe route.
There are moments in life when it’s time to sit still.
Moments when God calls us to stand
where we are, not because it’s the ‘safe” place,
but because there is a lesson to be learned in the quiet.
But there are also times, of equal importance,
when the Lord tells us to get to running,
to pick up speed, and prepare to jump.”
I’m thinking it’s God. He calls us each to something different. He called Peter to walk out on the water, but not the other twelve. And Peter followed, for a while anyway. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he was golden.
Could it be the still small voice whispering to the Warriors…. jump.
Are they listening?
Truly, that is the goal here, right? What God wants is for us to listen, focus on Him, and follow through. He wants us to take a risk and trust in Him. He wants us to be reaching and know that he is waiting to catch us.
My prayer today is that not only the Warriors succeed in carrying out the plans the Lord has written for their lives, but that you do. Maybe that includes huge successes, maybe not.
The important part is that we keep reaching, keep trying, keep listening…
Then… Take a risk and jump.
