On with your DIY Feather Christmas Tree
I love feathers! All kinds of feathers. A little feather here, a little feather there. I love the natural ones, the dyed ones, the big ones, and the small frilly ones. They are just so much fun. 🙂
So today I’m combining my love for feathers, my love of movies, and my love of Christmas into one awesome DIY project!Love feathers? Love White Christmas? Love this DIY Feather Christmas tree craft! Click To Tweet
It wasn’t hard for me to choose what I wanted to do for my part in the blog hop. There are tons of great Christmas movies, but I was immediately reminded of one of my favorite scenes from White Christmas.
Seriously. How adorable are these two? Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen (voiced over) are just wonderful. And how about those feather fans? Love them!
And then there’s this one.
Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye with ostrich plumes! What could be better?
So let’s jump into creating our DIY feather Christmas tree.
Step 1: Gather your materials
- Hot glue gun
- feathers ( about 2-3 inches long)
- floral foam cone
- tree topper decoration (I used an ornament)
Sidenote: I had to order my feathers from Etsy as I could not find any blue in my local craft stores. You could certainly do your tree in white or red or even natural colors. I think they all are beautiful, depending on the look you are going for.
Step 2: Create an atmosphere
If we are going to make Christmas decorations, let’s start the fire and get into the mood!
Step 3: Start Gluing
Beginning at the bottom of your cone, start gluing your feathers to the cone. For some feathers, you will need to bend them a bit to get the shape you are looking for. Continue gluing around and around and around the cone.
For my tree, I used two different sizes of feathers. These are “Blue Turkey Feathers”. I also used “Blue Turkey Marabou Short Down Fluffy Feathers” In hindsight, I wish I had a few more of the regular turkey feathers as I had to use only the fluffy feathers on the top part of the tree. You can see the difference between the feathers here.
Step 4: Keep gluing
After gluing the feathers all the way up to the top of the tree, I went back and added more of the “fluffy” feathers throughout the tree to fill in.
Step 5: Add a tree topper
You can add a bow, a ribbon, an ornament, or whatever you want for your tree topper. I found a cute ornament and just took off the hanger and tied it to my tree.
